What Tern checks, how it decides a site is down, and who it tells.

Checks

Check websites, APIs and scheduled jobs, with a second region confirming network failures before we alert you.

Choose HTTP, keyword, ping, TCP port, SSL expiry or cron heartbeat checks. An HTTP check tests the response; a keyword check also looks for text you expect. Ping and TCP checks help you watch services without a web page.

Network checks run from Frankfurt, London, Virginia, Oregon, Singapore and Sydney. A failed result triggers a check from a second region before an alert is sent. SSL checks warn before a certificate expires. For scheduled jobs, send a heartbeat to a unique URL and set the deadline and grace period; a missed heartbeat is confirmed by a second regional worker after that grace period.

Status pages

Publish the current state of your services and add incident updates where people can find them.

Group checks under service names people recognize, such as Website, API and Daily imports. Confirmed failures update the public page automatically. Add a written incident update when you know the scope and next step.

Every plan includes a hosted public page. Business supports your own domain on up to ten pages. Readers can follow incident feeds, and scheduled maintenance appears with its start and end time. Choose a light or dark theme to fit the page.

On-call alerts

Set a rota, choose alert channels and give an unacknowledged incident a backup contact.

Team and Business let you assign an on-call rota with named people and handover times. Confirmed incidents reach the current contact by the channels you select. Phone calls repeat the spoken alert until the recipient presses 1 to acknowledge it.

On Business, an escalation policy can notify a backup if nobody acknowledges within your chosen delay. Quiet hours hold routine messages until morning while incident paging follows the rota. Check the next handover and send a test alert before relying on a new schedule.

Incident records

Keep a timeline of confirmed failures, acknowledgments and updates sent to your status page.

A confirmed failure opens an incident with the affected check and the time it stopped answering. Alerts, acknowledgments and recovery appear in the same timeline, so the person taking over can see what happened.

Write an update with the affected services, the work in progress and the next update time. Publish it to the status page from the incident record. A maintenance window marks expected work on selected checks and suppresses their paging during the window.

Uptime reports

Read a weekly uptime report and compare response times across the six check regions.

The weekly report lists downtime and incidents for your checks. It gives your team a regular reason to review failures that recovered without needing a call. Every plan includes the report and access to the API.

Response-time charts separate Frankfurt, London, Virginia, Oregon, Singapore and Sydney. Compare the same time range before drawing conclusions about a slow endpoint. Export results as CSV for your own analysis; Business keeps 13 months of history.
